Importance of Technological Innovation & Funding in the Gaming Industry

The gaming industry, while a very profitable industry, relies on technological innovation to continue producing profits each year. As some of the reading suggests, a good portion of the gaming industry relies on producing console games that are reinvented or replaced roughly every five years or so. The first article (link #1) questions whether the gaming industry as we know it is dying, or at the very least threatened by the lack of newer consoles and competition from games (many of them free) on new platforms – tablets and mobile devices. The article reinforces our reading’s assertion that the top major gaming companies hold an advantage because it can easily cut through the clutter of these new, free games. The concentration of power among these large, multi-national companies allows them to easily fund and distribute games, compared to smaller, independent companies. The bigger companies may be slow to catch up in terms of innovation in the new platforms because they are set in their ways after developing all their ideas around a particular console or platform. However, the big companies have better resources to catch-up faster than other independent developers.

The second article (link #2) provides two examples of smaller companies that turned to Kickstarter to develop their gaming products. Bladepad is developing on an iPhone case that also serves as a video game controller. iMpulse is also developing the world’s smallest controller for mobile games and devices. These smaller companies raised funds via Kickstarter, reflecting the difficulty of raising capital to bring their innovative ideas to fruition. The gaming industry truly is one where all involved must “operate in a dynamic relationship that is mediated by capital and unequal power relationships….”as Kerr wrote.
