Rutgers Initiative To Focus on Women and Media

Rutgers is beginning a program to give women more of voice in the media world. The initiative is being called the IWL Women and Media Initiative which is combining two on campus programs. Green Davis, who founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media eight year ago has been asked to lead the charge.

IWL director, Alison Bertstein, noted that the only place women get representation is documentary film making. Her reasoning is that documentary film making is not full of multi-million dollar projects. Rutgers has traditionally been a leading university in gender equality research.

I think this is a great move for women in the industry. As Bernstein highlights, they already have many programs that cast a view of women in media. The role of the new initiative is to further the progress. Having events surrounding prominent women in media is crucial in developing young women in to understanding the process of getting involved in film and other creative industries.
