Need for some behavioral regulation on Web 2.0


Facebook remains under scrutiny after accusations that a cookie they use can track users’ online activity even after they log off of Facebook.  While Facebook denies that the cookie does or is capable of doing this, it brings privacy and the protection of privacy to the fore.  The idea of Facebook is to share information and socialize with “friends” and that the information be available to those friends.  While users voluntarily offer boundless amounts of information to Facebook, should the users expect that their data be secure, and unexploited?

Would federal behavioral regulations stifle the revenue streams of social media companies like Facebook?  It seems to be in the best interest of the federal government to afford individuals at least the knowledge of what companies are doing with their data; to obligate some transparency in data acquisition on the web.
