F8 Conference


Mark Zuckerberg does it again! The CEO announced distinctive redesigns to be introduced on Facebook at company’s annual conference for software developers and entrepreneurs. Included in Mark’s redesign strategy is the addition of a feature called “Timeline”.  Timeline, he said, will be “all your stories, all your apps, a new way to express who you are (abcnews.com).”  Additionally, Zuckerberg has created an interactive music feature which allows users to hear what their friends listening to by scrolling over their image. Facebook is partnering with several companies like Netflix and Spotify to launch the aforementioned innovative application, Open Graph.

In my humble opinion, it seems as though this prevalent  social network has become more disruptive. As users have been known to object past updates to the platform, it will be interesting to see how they will receive more dramatic changes.

From a management perspective, it seems as though Facebook is utilizing several media management theories proposed in  “Managing Media Work”. It is obvious that the company is constantly looking for strategic ways to improve interactivity on their website. As the movie behind this social phenomenon always comes to mind, I can’t help but think about the number of specialized human resources within the company that contributed to its success. Within the strategic management theory, there are several concepts that are illustrated in the “structure” of Facebook’s “performance”. First, the company has a collection of unique resources (i.e. branded individuals) that aid in facilitating and implementing strategies  (Deuze, 2011). Second, the company employs the niche theory approach, as it attempts to adapt to emerging competition within the social media industry (i.e. Twitter, Foursquare, Google +). Diffusion theory is also evident in the way Facebook operates according how consumers respond to its innovations, as well other new media products.
